 Who we are

Bi Unité Montréal (Bi Unity Montreal) is a not for profit organisation geared toward bisexuals in the Montreal area. Its goal is to make bisexuality known and to promote the recognition of bisexuality as a distinct sexual orientation. It also serves to gather bisexuals in a common space so that they may inform and entertain themselves, discuss ideas, support each other and unite for a common cause.

 Our goals
  • To help bisexuals acquire tools that will enable them to define themselves and solidify links between bisexual, homosexual and heterosexual communities.

  • To allow bisexuals to experience well being and security in their social, sexual and family lives whether they are single or in relationships.

  • To work with existing organizations to help control the spread of HIV/AIDS and of sexually transmitted diseases (STD).

 Our history

Bi Unité Montréal was founded in 1998 by Yves Bourgeois and Sylvie Duchesne. Yves Bourgeois, a sexology student in Montreal, had noted the lack of resources available for French-speaking bisexuals. After attending the Internation Conference on Bisexuality at Harvard University that year, he was inspired to gather information in order to create an association for bisexuals in Montreal.

The name Bi Unité Montréal was chosen by a group of interested people on April 8, 1998. On August 31, the association was officially registered with the government of Quebec as a community organization. The first board of administration was then formed with Yves Bourgeois as the president. That same year, several people joined the association to fill various positions on the committee and the association began to organize different social activities.

Since it’s creation, BUM has given several presentations in universities and community groups and has been interviewed for radio and television shows and for articles in various magazines and papers. BUM has participated in local events promoting HIV/AIDS and STD awareness and prevention and addressing sexual identity, as well as in local GLBT events. The association has also hosted speakers from other organizations. In 2001, BUM was the first bisexual group from Quebec to participate in the annual Divers-Cité Pride parade in Montreal.

BUM regularly continues to offer presentations, conferences and interviews to different groups who are interested in learning about and discussing bisexuality. Every year, BUM participates in the annual Divers-Cité pride celebrations in Montreal, namely the community day, where different organizations set up information booths, and celebrates International Bisexuality Day on September 23. It also holds an annual Bi Camp. Every month, it holds a discussion group for francophone bisexual men and women in the Montreal area where a predetermined theme relevant to bisexuals is discussed. BUM also holds monthly social events such as dinners, billiard parties and picnics.
